We never learn their names, and nor do we learn how the world came to be a wasteland yielding nothing but starvation and horror for its scattered survivors. The only warmth of tone and colour comes in flashback to memories of the boy’s mother, who is no longer with them.

Possible double feature: follow it up with 1981’s Quest for Fire, which stars Ron Perlman and Everett McGill (from Twin Peaks). This one depicts crossovers between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals and is set even farther back in our shared human past.
