The subtext to the film's surreality is of course Boone's long descent into alcoholism, which had all but claimed him by the time Kona Coast was made. Boone was a regular fixture in Kona in the 1960's; his swollen eyes, paunchy, scarred face, and whiskey baritone were for real. This gives the character of Moran a poignant realism.
Kona Coast was directed by Lamont Johnson, an American director, actor, composer, and producer. Before making Kona Coast , Lamont Johnson had directed A Covenant with Death , released in 1967 . Since, he directed The McKenzie Break , released in 1970 , A Gunfight (1971) , The Groundstar Conspiracy (1972) , The Last American Hero (1973) , Visit to a Chief's Son (1974) , and Lipstick (1976) .

1 ago 2011 · The film ends with no personal transformation by any of the characters. And it consists of mostly "shoe leather" -- Boone walking, walking, and walking some more, usually to the next place to kick butts. All in all, Kona Coast has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. Which is precisely why I recommend it.
