LEAF BY NIGGLE. J.R.R. Tolkien. THERE was once a little man called Niggle, who had a long journey to make. He did not want to go, indeed the whole idea was distasteful to him; but he could not get out of it. He knew he would have to start some time, but he did not hurry with his preparations.

Plot summary. In this story, an artist named Niggle lives in a society that does not value art. Working only to please himself, he paints a canvas of a great tree with a forest in the distance. He invests each and every leaf of his tree with obsessive attention to detail, making every leaf uniquely beautiful.

[1] It is included in the book Tree and Leaf (1964) and in other compilations, such as The Tolkien Reader (1966), Poems and Stories (1980), and Tales from the Perilous Realm (1997).

Si intitola Leaf by Niggle, e segue “un piccolo uomo di nome Niggle che ha dovuto compiere un lungo viaggio”. All’inizio della storia viene presentato come un artista amatoriale che continua ad essere interrotto dal suo vicino, il signor Parish. Nonostante sia infastidito da Parish, Niggle lo aiuta in tutto ciò di cui ha bisogno.
Summary. Analysis. Niggle is reluctant to prepare for a long journey he knows he’ll have to set out on. He would rather spend all his time painting. But the laws of his country dictate that he must spend his time on other tasks, and his neighbor, Parish, keeps requesting his help with various errands.
Fantasy is the unrealistic and the imaginative part of fairy stories. It includes notions of the supernatural, and unprecedented events. Tolkien defines fantasy as the art of sub-creation (47-8) and in “Leaf by Niggle,” Niggle is the sub-creator of Niggle’s Parish – a heavenly place that he created in his painting.
