Das Institut wurde 1969 von Lee Strasberg gegründet, dem damaligen Leiter des Actors Studio in New York. Dem vorausgegangen war die Eröffnung des Actors Studio West. Es besteht noch heute. Das dort praktizierte Method Acting wurde beibehalten. Heute wird die Schule von seiner dritten Frau, Anna Strasberg, geleitet.

At the New York campus, the Two-Year Professional Acting Conservatory is approved. Veteran applicants must complete the same application process as all other Conservatory applicants. Veterans must also submit: Certificate of Eligibility and/or DD-214. Transcripts from all previous study, unofficial transcripts are sufficient.
