Leeds Modern School was founded on 14 July 1845 in Rossington Street as the Mathematical and Commercial School. This building in the centre of Leeds became council offices after the school moved to a site at Lawnswood in 1931.

LEEDS MODERN SCHOOL - A Short History. Milestones. 1824—Leeds Mechanics' Institute established. 1845—The Mathematical and Commercial School established (now Leeds Modern School). 1854—The Ladies Educational Institution established (now Lawnswood High School).
The school was founded in 1972 and had its first comprehensive intake in 1974. Its predecessors were the Leeds Modern School, a boys' grammar school (founded 1845) attended by Alan Bennett, and Lawnswood High School for Girls, a girls' grammar school (founded 1854), which moved to the current Lawnswood site in 1932.

As The Mods have no Old Boys website of their own at present (aw, shame!), this page includes some basic info. about Leeds Modern School. The Mod grew out of The Mathematical and Commerce School, which was established in 1845 by The Leeds Mechanics' Institute, i.e. nine years before our school was founded.

The school moved to Lawnswood and took the name Lawnswood High School to share a site with Leeds Modern School for Boys. The two schools are separated by a joint swimming pool and dining room. 1972.

26 lug 2022 · Here are 11 Leeds schools – listed alphabetically – which are no longer with us. Some were reduced to rubble while some are still standing although they have been repurposed. Some closed because their buildings were no longer fit for purpose. Others closed for more controversial reasons.
