6 giu 2017 · Born this day: Music Hall star Leo Dryden (George Dryden Wheeler, 1863-1939). Dryden was quite a well known performer in his day, nicknamed “The Kipling of the Halls” on account of his repertoire of patriotic and sentimental ballads.
The son of Hannah Chaplin and Leo Dryden, Wheeler Dryden was taken away from his mother as a baby by his father. He was touring India and the Far East as a vaudeville comedian when he first learned from his father that Charlie Chaplin was his half brother.
Leo Dryden was best known as the Kipling of the Halls, noted for his patriotic and colonial songs including "The Miner"s Dream of Home" (1891). He also performed parodies, including "Shopmates" and one on "Feniculi Fenicula".
