The Les Misérables musical is set against the backdrop of 19th-century France and tells a moving story of unrequited love, sacrifice, passion, redemption, and revolutionary spirit. The newly-free prisoner Jean Valjean builds a new, respectable life for himself but is hunted by the prison guard Javert, all while revolutionaries fight for freedom in France.

Het is een soort epos in proza, met name ook in zijn beschrijvingen van de Slag bij Waterloo en de Parijse opstand van 1832.
Plot Summary. Les Misérables is the story of four people, Bishop Myriel, Jean Valjean, Fantine, and Marius Pontmercy, who meet, part, then meet again during the most agitated decades of nineteenth-century France. It also tells the story of the 1832 revolution and describes the unpleasant side of Paris.
