It was founded in 1458 by Bishop of Winchester William of Waynflete. [6] It is one of the wealthiest Oxford colleges, as of 2022, [3] and one of the strongest academically, setting the record for the highest Norrington Score in 2010 and topping the table twice since then. [7]

Magdalen College was founded in 1458 by William Waynflete, Bishop of Winchester, and Lord Chancellor. It is one of the oldest, largest, and most beautiful colleges in Oxford.
It is a lively college with an active and inclusive undergraduate body of about 400 students, who can live in college accommodation for the whole of their course. Alongside its tradition of academic excellence, Magdalen ensures that its students are well supported.
The College will be closed to all visitors on 27 September, October 6th and 20 December – 31 December, all dates inclusive, but see below for New Year’s Day 2025). Despite being in the centre of Oxford, Magdalen is teeming with flora and fauna, including kingfishers, and otters.
Magdalen College has on-site facilities for rugby, cricket, football, squash, tennis and hockey, and an all-weather pitch. The college offers access to free gym and swimming facilities and there is also a college boat club.
