Mahmoud Darwish (Arabic: مَحمُود دَرْوِيْش, romanized: Maḥmūd Darwīsh; 13 March 1941 – 9 August 2008) was a Palestinian poet and author who was regarded as Palestine's national poet. In 1988, Darwish wrote the Palestinian Declaration of Independence, which was a declaration for the creation of a State of Palestine.

By Dr Oliver Tearle (Loughborough University) Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008) is one of the greatest names in Palestinian literature. After publishing his first poetry collecting, Wingless Birds, when he was just 19 years old, Darwish went on to forge a formidable literary reputation.
Darwish lived for many years in exile in Beirut and Paris. He is the author of over 30 books of poetry and eight books of prose, and earned the Lannan Cultural Freedom Prize from the Lannan Foundation, the Lenin Peace Prize, and the Knight of Arts and Belles Lettres Medal from France.
26 apr 2024 · Mahmoud Darwish (born March 13, 1941, Al-Birwa, Palestine [now El-Birwa, Israel]—died August 9, 2008, Houston, Texas, U.S.) was a Palestinian poet who gave voice to the struggles of the Palestinian people. After the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Darwish witnessed massacres that forced his family to escape to Lebanon.
