Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland (11 February 1715 – 17 July 1785) was the richest woman in Great Britain of her time, styled Lady Margaret Harley before 1734, Duchess of Portland from 1734 to her husband's death in 1761, and Dowager Duchess of Portland from 1761 until her own death in 1785.
As a young woman, Elizabeth was introduced to the enlightened Lady Margaret Harley, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Oxford, and the two became close friends. Through Margaret, three years her senior, she was introduced to many famous men of letters and was delighted to discover how men and women conversed as equals in Margaret’s household.
Lady Margaret Cavendish Holles Harley, Duchess of Portland, amassed one of the largest and most remarkable natural history collections, known as The Portland Museum. Margaret, also known as Peggy, was born on 11 February 1715.
