The junior Swabian branch of the House of Hohenzollern was founded by Frederick IV, Burgrave of Nuremberg. Ruling the minor German principalities of Hechingen, Sigmaringen and Haigerloch, this branch of the family decided to remain Roman Catholic and from 1567 onwards split into the Hohenzollern-Hechingen, Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and Hohenzollern-Haigerloch branches.
