He was also not very fond of his wife, whom he tried unsuccessfully to divorce, but very fond of his mistresses. In fact, he even tried to marry one, Maria Fitzherbert, although the marriage was not legal as his father did not give his consent.
In 1784 Maria Fitzherbert was twice widowed and just coming out of mourning into London society when she met the Prince of Wales—the future George IV—who was then twenty-one to her twenty-seven. He was immediately enthralled.
