Pitchshifter was formed in 1989 (initially spelled Pitch Shifter) by guitarist and programmer Johnny Carter and bassist Mark Clayden, later joined by Stu Toolin, and then Jon "JS" Clayden (Mark Clayden's brother).

La band è stata formata nel 1989 da Johnny A. Carter (chitarra solista, programming) e Mark Clayden (basso, cori), con Stuart Toolin (chitarra ritmica) e JS Clayden (cori). JS Clayden occupò subito il posto di cantante e co-programmatore con l'EP Submit nel 1992.
PSI Records. Years active: 1989-2003, 2006-2012, 2018-present. Pitchshifter's early years deliberately reflected their contemporary, Godflesh. Their albums Industrial and Submit used the same type of drum machine that Godflesh used early in their career.
Mark Clayden is best known as the bassist and founding member of Pitchshifter; originally spelled Pitch Shifter, the band is credited as one of the early practitioners of industrial/metal, with Clayden also serving as the lead vocalist on the legendary Industrial debut.
