The Revolution itself was relatively bloodless, but pro-Stuart revolts between 1689 and 1746 caused significant casualties, while the political movement known as Jacobitism persisted into the late 18th century.

1 giorno fa · John Kenyon, in his study of British political debate from 1689 to 1720, has remarked that Locke's theories were "mentioned so rarely in the early stages of the [Glorious] Revolution, up to 1692, and even less thereafter, unless it was to heap abuse on them" and that "no one, including most Whigs, [was] ready for the idea of a notional or abstract contract of the kind adumbrated by Locke".
5 giorni fa · A floundering speaker is not treated so courteously. Churchill wrote of this disconcerting experience in a 1934 essay, “When I ‘Dried Up.’”. He recalled with pleasure how colleagues offered him “the greatest patience and kindness.”. Unfortunately, the essay was never reprinted—not even in the marvelous Collected Essays.
5 giorni fa · James landed in Ireland on 14 March 1689 in an attempt to recover his kingdoms, but, despite a simultaneous rising in Scotland, in April a Scottish Convention followed that of England, both finding that James had "forfeited" the throne and offered it to William and Mary.
