Mary Patricia McAleese (/ ˌ m æ k ə ˈ l iː s / MAK-ə-LEESS; Irish: Máire Pádraigín Mhic Ghiolla Íosa; née Leneghan; born 27 June 1951) is an Irish activist lawyer, academic, author, and former politician who served as the eighth president of Ireland from November 1997 to November 2011.

10 mar 2024 · Mary McAleese, Irish politician who was president of Ireland from 1997 to 2011. She was the country’s second female president and its first president from Northern Ireland. McAleese was a member of the Fianna Fail party.
Mary McAleese was re-elected on Friday 1st October 2004 being the only validly-nominated candidate. She is a barrister and former Professor of Law. Born on June 27th 1951 in Belfast, she is the first President to come from Northern Ireland. She is married, since 1976, to Dr. Martin McAleese, an accountant and dentist.
She served as President of Ireland from 1997 to 2011. Mary is the author of Reconciled Being: Love in chaos (1997), Building Bridges (2011), Quo Vadis?: Collegiality in the Code of Canon Law (2012), Children’s Rights and Obligations in Canon Law (2019), Here's the Story (2020), and The 17 Irish Martyrs (2022).
Mary McAleese began her first term as President of Ireland on 11 November 1997, following her inauguration at Saint Patrick's Hall in the State Apartments in Dublin Castle. McAleese was first elected as president in 1997, having received the nomination of Fianna Fáil.
