Mathias Haydn (31 January 1699 – 12 September 1763) was the father of two famous composers, Joseph and Michael Haydn. He worked as a wheelwright in the Austrian village of Rohrau, where he also served as Marktrichter, an office akin to village mayor.

Mathias Haydn was ‘a great lover of music by nature’ (this phrase in Haydn’s laconic account is sometimes taken as applying to Harrach, but it must be his father who was meant), who ‘played the harp without reading a note of music’; his mother sang the melodies.
His father was Mathias Haydn, a wheelwright who also served as "Marktrichter", or marketplace supervisor. Haydn's mother Maria, née Koller, had previously worked as a cook in the palace of Count Harrach , the presiding aristocrat of Rohrau.

In particular, my article explores three key moments in Haydn’s career and de-velopment as a composer.
