Maxine Kumin, an avid horsewoman with “an unreasonable and passionate commitment to language,” has amassed over the last half-century an oeuvre ever more essential and unforgettable. One of the most celebrated and enduring figures in American literature, she is the author of thirteen books of poems, five novels, four essay collections, short stories, and more than twenty children’s books.
Maxine Kumin (1925-2014) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the author of 18 poetry collections. She also published more than 20 children’s books, a memoir, five novels, several books of essays, and a collection of short stories. Kumin taught writing at Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, and Tufts University.
It seems fitting that Maxine Kumin’s last published work was her memoir, The Pawnbroker’s Daughter (W.W.
