MAYNARD DIXON HIGHLIGHTS. Maynard Dixon was an important 20th-century American painter who is best known for his iconic depictions of the American West. Originally from California, Dixon painted subjects in Arizona, New Mexico and eventually settled in Southern Utah.
He felt that the only cure would be a dose of the wilderness and its peoples. He decided he would have to “go East to see the West,” and he began his first of many journeys through the Southwest. Maynard Dixon sketched the landscape and Native Americans he came across, in places like Fort Mohave, Prescott, Tempe, Isleta Pueblo, and Santa Fe.
Renwick Gallery. Washington, DC 20006. Born in Fresno, California, Maynard Dixon was largely self-taught as an artist. His first sketches were of the Western landscape. In 1893 he attended the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco, but withdrew after only three months.
