Figlia di Mary Wilkinson Streep (1915-2001), artista ed editrice, e di Harry William Streep Jr. (1910-2003), dirigente farmaceutico. Ha due fratelli più giovani: Harry William Streep III (nato nel 1951) e Dana David Streep (nato nel 1953).
