Michael Drayton (1563 – 23 December 1631) was an English poet who came to prominence in the Elizabethan era, continuing to write through the reign of James I and into the reign of Charles I. Many of his works consisted of historical poetry. He was also the first English-language author to write odes in the style of Horace.

Michael Drayton (b. 1563–d. 1631) was one of the most versatile of English poets: he wrote sonnets and theatrical plays, as well as historical, pastoral, and topographical poetry. He was highly praised in his own time, by Ben Jonson among others, and was buried in Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey.
