Miller has incorporated the high-lonesome sound of real country into a contemporary vocabulary that includes Percy Mayfield's decidedly urban sensibility as well as the strum and twang of Nashville.
His songs have been covered by country insiders like the Dixie Chicks and Lee Ann Womack, and he’s spent time backing up country outsiders like Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, and Lucinda Williams. It’s no wonder, then, that his fifth album Midnight and Lonesome is such a stylistically scattered affair.
The album's crowning moment, though, is Miller's worn-to-the-bone rendition of "A Showman's Life," Jesse Winchester's rumination on the toll taken by a musician's calling; aided by Emmylou Harris's harmonizing, he simply makes the song his own.
