Rakhil’s husband, Mikhail Plisetski, a Soviet diplomat, was arrested in 1938 and later shot, while Rakhil and her infant son Azari, the future dancer and choreographer, were sent to a prison camp for wives of “enemies of the people.” Sulamith Messerer raised Rakhil’s daughter, who became the prima ballerina Maya Plisetskaya.
