Florence Nightingale (Firenze, 12 maggio 1820 – Londra, 13 agosto 1910) è stata un'infermiera britannica nota come "la signora con la lanterna". È considerata la fondatrice dell'assistenza infermieristica moderna, in quanto fu la prima ad applicare il metodo scientifico attraverso l'utilizzo della statistica.
Aiutata da Harriet Martineau, scrittrice e giornalista affermata, e dalla sua cerchia di intellettuali, Miss Nightingale esige anche una riforma completa della sanità militare.
