Montezuma I (in nahuatl: Motēcuhzōma Ilhuicamīna, Colui che scocca frecce contro il cielo, o Huehuemotecuhzuma, Montezuma il vecchio) ( 1398 – 1469) fu il quinto Hueyi Tlatoani di Tenochtitlán, cioè imperatore azteco ( 1440 - 1469 ).
Montezuma II è conosciuto più comunemente come Montezuma: attualmente il numero si usa per distinguerlo dal suo omonimo, anche lui imperatore, Motecuhzoma I, che i cronisti indigeni chiamavano anche Huehuemoctezuma, ovvero Montezuma il vecchio.

Accession and coronation. After emperor Huitzilihuitl 's death, Moctezuma's brother Chimalpopoca ruled for ten years until his assassination. During his reign, Moctezuma and his brother Tlacaelel I led an opposition group of young nobles. This group was militant in nature, and they chose his half-uncle Itzcoatl as the next ruler.

MONTEZUMA I (Motecuhzoma Ilhuicamina "il Grande"), quinto re del Messico. Figlio di Huitzilihuitl e nipote di Acamapictli, fondatore della sua dinastia, nacque nel 1390. Sotto gli ordini del re Itzcoatl cooperò, come guerriero e ambasciatore, nella conclusione di un trattato di alleanza fra il Messico, Tezcuco e Tlacopán nel 1430.

Motecuhzoma I (Motecuhzoma Ilhuicamina; b. ca. 1397; d. 1468/69), Aztec emperor from 1440 to 1468. The elder Motecuhzoma ("He Becomes Angry Like a Lord") was the fifth Mexica ruler, or tlatoani, and the first who can be called an emperor: his conquests extended Aztec rule beyond the Valley of Mexico and ensured a luxurious tribute supply.
