Nativa americana, è stata una delle prime cantanti di jazz negli anni '30. Dotata di una bellissima voce ottenne un discreto successo popolare e fu conosciuta come "The Queen of Swing", "The Rockin' Chair Lady" (dalla sua interpretazione del brano Rockin' Chair) e "Mrs. Swing" mentre suo marito, Red Norvo, era Mr. Swing.

31 mag 2021 · On her own record session of Aug. 18, 1932, Bailey recorded her first version of “Rockin’ Chair.” Rather than taking it as a humorous duet (which was how Louis Armstrong did it), Bailey sang the song as a sentimental ballad. That success led to her getting the nickname of “The Rockin’ Chair Lady.”

26 apr 2024 · In 1929 they introduced Whiteman to Bailey, and she joined the orchestra as the first featured female vocalist in a big band. Bailey’s career took off during her four years with Whiteman. Her renditions of “Georgia on My Mind” and particularly “Rockin’ Chair” were popular favourites.
