Murray Edwards College is a women-only constituent college of the University of Cambridge. It was founded in 1954 as New Hall and renamed in 2008. The name honours a gift of £30 million by alumna Ros Edwards and her husband Steve, and the first President and woman Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge , Rosemary Murray .

About. A brief history. Alumna Dr Ros Edwards with her husband Steve Edwards. Founded as the New Hall, the first year of just 16 students moved into buildings on Silver Street in 1954. The College was able to relocate to Huntingdon Road when members of the Darwin family donated their family home, ‘The Orchard’.
Murray Edwards College (founded as New Hall and known affectionately as Medwards) is a women's college of the University of Cambridge. Characterised by its white bricks and dome, it is a modern and progressive college. It is the only non-denominational college in Cambridge, so has no religious affiliation or chapel.

The Murray Edwards Story The College was founded as ‘New Hall’ in 1954; six years after the University began awarding women degrees. We opened our doors to just 16 students in that first year, who resided in temporary accommodation while funds continued to be raised for a permanent home.
