Con alle spalle un lungo curriculum televisivo, McDonough acquista popolarità grazie al ruolo del Tenente Hawke in Star Trek - Primo contatto e quello del Tenente Lynn 'Buck' Compton nella miniserie Band of Brothers - Fratelli al fronte.
McDonough played Dave Williams on the fifth season of Desperate Housewives. He also starred in the lead role on 2004 medical drama Medical Investigation for its one full season. In 1996, McDonough voiced Bruce Banner in the animated television series The Incredible Hulk which ran for two seasons.
McDonough is well known for performances in productions, such as BAND OF BROTHERS, MINORITY REPORT, WALKING TALL and STAR-TREK FIRST CONTACT. He also started in many stage productions, and most recently playing Whitey Bulger on stage in FINDING WHITEY at the Wilbur theater in Boston.
