  5. What is New College? A Philosophy. Four guiding principles underlie New College's approach to education: Each student is responsible in the last analysis for his or her own education. The best education demands a joint search for learning by exciting teachers and able students.

  6. New College was founded in 1379 by William of Wykeham (1324-1404), Bishop of Winchester, as The College of St Mary of Winchester in Oxford. It very soon became known as New College to distinguish it from an earlier Oxford college (Oriel, founded 1326) also dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

  7. New College is one of the largest, most famous and architecturally striking colleges, with beautiful gardens, and a variety of modern and old buildings. It has a thriving, supportive and internationally diverse graduate community, with approximately 100 new graduates admitted each year.
