In 1266 Venetian traders Niccolò and Maffeo Polo, the father and uncle of Marco Polo, were among the first Westerners to travel the Silk Road to China. Before the birth of Marco, they established trading posts in Constantinople, Sudak in the Crimea, and in a western part of the Mongol Empire.
Once they arrived, Niccolò and Maffeo Polo found themselves in the company of the legendary Assassin Mentor, Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad. It was a meeting that proved as life-altering as it was mysterious. After spending barely a month in Altaïr's company, Niccolò and Maffeo were changed men.
