Garland graduated in 1957, and his first published drawing appeared some six years later, after he had been working as stage manager and director at the Royal Court Theatre. It was a caricature, and was commissioned by Queen magazine, after the editor, Mark Boxer, had seen some of his sketches.
The Coma is a novel by Alex Garland, illustrated by his father, Nicholas Garland. It explores the boundary between the conscious and subconscious mind. The Coma was published in 2004, eight years after Garland's first novel, The Beach.

After studying Fine Art at the Slade School of Art, he became the paper's first political cartoonist in 1966. He is the creator of the comic strip 'Barry McKenzie' with Barry Humphries.
