Importance. Celebrate. Odisha Day, or ‘Utkal Divas,’ is a regional Indian holiday celebrated every April 1. It commemorates the eastern state, Odisha, functioning as a separate entity since 1936. Odisha was the first state in India to be created based on the grounds of a common language.
It occurs on the first day of the traditional solar month of Meṣa (Georgian: Aries), hence equivalent lunar month Baisakha (odia: ବୈଶାଖ). The Odia calendar follows the Utkaliya era, which began on Bhādra śukla dvādaśī from 592 CE.
