Olivier van Noort (Utrecht, ca. 1558 – Schoonhoven, 22 februari 1627) was een Nederlandse ontdekkingsreiziger, die als eerste Nederlander rond de wereld voer. De reis van Olivier van Noort werd ondernomen in het vroege begin van de Hollandse zeereizen naar Indië. Routes naar Indië waren al ontdekt door de Portugezen en Spanjaarden.
Expedition. The voyage around the world led by Olivier van Noort. 1598 - 1601. In 1601 Olivier van Noort became the first Dutchman to completely circumnavigate the world. He did so as the fourth European to complete this journey, after Ferdinand Magellan, Cavendish and Francis Drake.
Olivier van Noort: de eerste Nederlander die rond de wereld voer. Aan het eind van de 16e eeuw was een eigen route naar Indië voor de Republiek van groot belang. De bekende routes waren namelijk in handen van Spanje en Portugal. De Republiek was op dat moment in (Tachtigjarige) oorlog met Spanje (en Portugal wegens de Spaanse annexatie sinds 1580).
Oliver van Noort was the first Hollander to sail around the world. Incidentally, he was the fourth navigator to succeed in this dangerous enterprise since in the year 1520 the little ships of Magellan had accomplished the feat of circumnavigating the globe. Of the hero of this memorable Dutch voyage we know almost nothing.
