Otakar Vávra è considerato da molti il Padre della cinematografia ceca. Nel 1968 lo Stato gli conferì il titolo di Artista nazionale. Nel 2001 gli è stato assegnato il premio Leone Ceco per il contributo di una vita dato alla cultura ceca, mentre nel 2004 ha ottenuto la Medaglia d'onore dalla presidenza della repubblica.
Otakar Vávra (28. února 1911 Hradec Králové – 15. září 2011 Praha) byl český filmový režisér, scenárista a pedagog. Mezi jeho významná režijní díla patří filmy husitské trilogie Jan Hus , Jan Žižka a Proti všem (1954–1956), Romance pro křídlovku (1966) a Kladivo na čarodějnice (1969).

Otakar Vávra (28 February 1911 – 15 September 2011) was a Czech film director, screenwriter and pedagogue. Biography and career. Vávra attended universities in Brno and Prague, where he studied architecture. Otakar Vávra was born on 28 February 1911 in Hradec Kralove, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary [now Czech Republic]. He was a writer and director, known for Witchhammer (1970), Romance pro kridlovku (1967) and Dny zrady (1973). He died on 15 September 2011 in Prague, Czech Republic.
