Inspired by the life of French diplomat and historian Alexis de Tocqueville, Australian author Peter Carey’s historical novel Parrot and Olivier in America (2010) follows Olivier de Garmont and his secretary, Parrot, as they come to eighteenth-century America to explore the nation's penal system.
The family makes a small comeback when the Bourbons are restored to the throne, but in 1831, a year after the July Revolution, Olivier, a rising young lawyer, decides to push off to America.
