Past tense. Past perfect. Level: intermediate. The past perfect is made from the verb had and the past participle of a verb: I had finished the work. She had gone. The past perfect continuous is made from had been and the -ing form of a verb: I had been working there for a year. They had been painting the bedroom.
Quando usiamo il Past Perfect è sempre chiaro quale azione è accaduta prima. Se invece ricorriamo all’uso di parole come per esempio before/prima o after/dopo, l’utilizzo del Past Perfect diventa opzionale. The film started before we arrive. Ma anche: The film had started before we arrived. Il film era cominciato quando siamo arrivati.

Il past perfect è il tempo del verbo inglese usato per parlare di un'azione che è avvenuta prima di un'altra azione nel passato. È l'equivalente al trapassato prossimo in italiano. Il past perfect simple indica che un fatto passato si è verificato in un momento antecedente rispetto a un altro avvenimento (che può essere omesso nella frase oppure espresso con il past simple ). Ecco perché dicevo che si usa per riferirsi a un passato… molto passato!
