Paul Deakin studied music at the University of Miami and along with perfecting his drumming skills, also studied mallets and after college, taught music for a bit in Miami. By age 30, Deakin, along with lead singer Raul Malo and bassist Robert Reynolds, formed The Mavericks.

In December 1989, a country band with a Cuban-American lead singer took the stage at a punk rock club in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood. “It was all wrong, and somehow it worked,” says Paul Deakin, co-founder and drummer of the Mavericks.
The line-up includes Malo’s fellow Miamian and charter bandmember, Paul Deakin on drums and vibraphone, as well as veteran Jerry Dale McFadden, who joined in 1993. Eddie Perez, a Mexican American guitarist from Los Angeles, is the band’s youngest and newest member, becoming a Maverick in 2003.

Paul Deakin began his drumming career at the age of 6, he managed to temporarily end the support of his parents by breaking his drumheads right out of the gate. Not long after that, he realized that sports were not his thing and the only way that he would attract any female attention was to follow in Ringo’s footsteps…so he cheerfully recalls.
