Paul Verhoeven nasce il 18 luglio 1938 ad Amsterdam, in Olanda. Dopo aver frequentato l'Università di Leiden, dove nel 1964 si laurea in Matematica e Fisica, deve interrompere la sua passione per il cinema (concretizzatasi già da studente con la realizzazione di alcuni cortometraggi) per arruolarsi nella Marina olandese.

He entered the Royal Netherlands Navy, where he began his film career by making documentaries for the Navy and later for TV. In 1969, he directed the popular Dutch TV series, Floris (1969), about a medieval knight.
