8 feb 2024 · Founded in 1805, PAFA is the first school and museum of fine arts in the nation. PAFA’s museum is internationally known for its collections of American art, and our school attracts some of the most committed and promising art students.

The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA) was founded in 1805 by painter and scientist Charles Willson Peale, sculptor William Rush, and other artists and business leaders. Since its founding, PAFA has collected works by leading American artists, as well as works by distinguished alumni and faculty of its school.

There’s a noble group of portraits by Gilbert Stuart and magnificent artworks by Benjamin West, Thomas Sully, John Neagle, Thomas Eakins, Charles Willson Peale, and other painters.
