Petar II Petrović Njegoš (Njeguši, 1.11.1813. – Cetinje, 19.10.1851.) – Montenegrin bishop, ruler (1830- 1851), poet, writer and philosopher was born in the village of Njeguši. His father was Tomo Markov, brother of Petar I and his mother was Ivana Proroković. He was baptized with the name Radivoje, or shorter Rade.

The mausoleum is located twenty-one kilometres via asphalt road from near-by Cetinje and it was built on the idea of Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović.

The Mountain Wreath (Serbian: Горски вијенац / Gorski vijenac) is a poem and a play written by Prince-Bishop and poet Petar II Petrović-Njegoš. Njegoš wrote The Mountain Wreath during 1846 in Cetinje and published it the following year after the printing in an Armenian monastery in Vienna.

From this year every November Montenegro will celebrate her national poet, spiritual leader and reformer who brought his country culturally closer to Europe.
