Led by Anglo-Ukrainian musician Peter Solowka, the group – which released its first, eponymous album in 1991 – was an off-shoot of popular indie band The Wedding Present.

Gedge and Gregory recruited an old schoolmate of Gedge's, Peter Solowka, to play guitar and auditioned a string of drummers, including John Ramsden, and Mike Bedford, with whom they recorded a demo tape, before settling on Shaun Charman.
