Pinturas de Tamayo ostensibly depicts five paintings by the great Mexican artist, but evidently Stucky wasn’t trying very hard to characterize them in an expressively meaningful (to anyone else) way. Paul Griffiths in his notes praises Stucky for not making a “condescending attempt at a ‘Latino’ atmosphere.”
Pinturas de Tamayo (Pictures of Tamayo) is an orchestral composition in five movements by the American composer Steven Stucky. The work was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, who premiered the work on March 28, 1996, under the conductor Michael Gielen in Symphony Center, Chicago.
