At the novel’s opening, Maria is in some kind of institution. The rest of the novel, through an almost stream-of-consciousness series of flashbacks, tells how she got there.
Perry next directed “Doc” (1971), a debunking of the Wyatt Earp – Doc Holliday legend. The western, which was written by Pete Hamill, starred Stacy Keach, Harris Yulin, and Faye Dunaway.
