Reading the wikiepedia article on Pop Punk, it says that pop punk is distinguished a punk subgenre is from other punk by taking inspiration from 1960s pop music like the Beatles. I don't know if you need to be a music nerd to understand but I never really heard much overlap between the Beatles and MCR or anything like them, what does wikipedia mean by this?
