RAY STILES. Ray Stiles started playing bass at the age of 14 on a guitar made by his dad. His musical influences were the beat groups of the early 60s; including The Hollies. He joined Mud in 1966 and turned professional in 1968. The band enjoyed fourteen top twenty hits, including three number one records, and performed all over the country.
The band was founded by lead guitarist Rob Davis, lead vocalist Les Gray, drummer Dave Mount (born 3 March 1947, Carshalton; died 2 December 2006, St Helier Hospital, Carshalton) and bassist Ray Stiles (born 20 November 1946, Guildford, Surrey).

23 gen 2024 · Mud was formed in 1966 by four friends from Carshalton, Greater London: Les Gray, Rob Davis, Dave Mount, and Ray Stiles. They played in various bands together before settling on the name Mud in 1968. They initially performed as a rock and roll revival band, covering songs by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and others.

Ray was very much the brainy one of the band, leaving school with a satchel full of ‘O’ levels, going on to the North London Polytechnic to study to be an architect. But even while he was studying, Ray dreamed of becoming a musician. Ray continues to tour as a member of the Hollies.
