Memphis Bleek was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in the Marcy Projects, located in the Bedford–Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, the same neighborhood as Jay-Z.

Based on what I've gotten just from side mentions from Guru and Just Blaze interviews is that Memphis Bleek was there at the time Jay was transitioning from the streets to music. So I think his vision was two fold. Get Bleek out the streets. And, spend dirty money running a record label on this artist you're trying to launch.
