Dopo gli studi decise di dedicarsi alla recitazione iscrivendosi alla Royal Academy of Dramatic Art e debuttò nel 1928 a Londra nella commedia Oscar Wilde, poi ripresa a Broadway nel 1938, nel ruolo del tormentato scrittore. Altro ruolo rilevante ricoprì l'anno successivo allo Strand Theatre ne L'isola del tesoro di Robert Louis Stevenson.
