Our History. A new secondary school in West Auckland. The School was established and was named after a famous New Zealander Lord Ernest Rutherford. 1960. Rutherford High School Opens. The school opened on 5 February 1961 with a roll of 154 third form students and a staff of nine. 1961. Traditions Start to be Established - 1961.
This course involves students investigating the properties of different hard materials and learning a range of different practical skills while working through a series of small design-based and practical projects. These projects include: Students designing, testing and racing a co2 powered dragster.
Rutherford College provides coeducational secondary education to an increasingly multicultural school population in the Te Atatu Peninsula, West Auckland. Just over 20% of students identify as Māori and 11% as Pacific. Asian student numbers continue to grow. Since the October 2010 ERO report, a number of key staff changes occurred.

Rutherford College is located in a residential coastal area of west Auckland only 15 minutes from downtown Auckland city. West Auckland is known for its spectacular surf beaches and bush walks. It also has many sports facilities, parks, cafes and shopping centres.
