The Mining Faculty as an independent structural unit of the Institute was formed in 1905. Over the years of work, in accordance with the requirements of the time, the structure of the faculty has repeatedly changed, departments, laboratories have changed, the most popular specialties and areas of scientific research have been singled out.
Saint-Petersburg Mining University is the first technical higher educational institution in Russia, founded by Empress Catherine II in 1773. It offers eight schools of engineering, geological prospecting, oil and gas, mining, civil engineering, power and mechanical engineering, mineral raw material processing, economics and humanities and sciences. It is ranked #1001-1200 in QS World University Rankings 2024.
Mining University is the first higher technical university in Russia. Empress Catherine the Great signed the decree on its establishment in 1773, and the architectural complex was designed by Andrey Voronikhin. It was specially built for students of the Mining School – as the university was called then – and decorated with 12-column porticoes.
