  1. Establishment of St Petersburg University. In January 1724, the decree signed by Peter the Great established the Academy with University and Gymnasium as its part which trained future specialists for the Academy. That’s when the history of the university education in Russia started. It was the era of the Academic University.

The Main Pedagogical Institute (where Dmitri Mendeleev studied) was restored in 1828 as an educational institution independent of Saint Petersburg University, and trained teachers until it was finally closed in 1859. 1821–1917.
