Modern Art. Thomas " Sam " Doyle (1906–1985) was an African-American artist from Saint Helena Island, South Carolina. [1] His colorful paintings on sheet metal and wood recorded the history and people of St. Helena's Gullah community.

Sam Doyle grew up on Saint Helena Island, a remote South Carolina enclave populated mainly by the descendants of African slaves, who vastly outnumbered whites. Due to its isolation and its ethnic concentration, Gullah culture took root here, giving the island a distinct tradition with African roots that persisted with rare continuity into Doyle’s time.

Sam Doyle was born in 1906 on Saint Helena Island, South Carolina, the center of the region's Gullah community, where African influences thrived. He began making paintings on cast-off sheet metal and wood panels in 1944; most were portraits of people and events important to his community.
